The Peridot is an olive green gemstone that is ever-increasing in popularity. As August's birthstone, this gem has long been aligned with the zodiac sign of Leo. The peridot is also thought to symbolise harmony, peace and good health. In fact, it was used for centuries as a way to ward off evil as people slept.
How Peridots are Made
The peridot has found its way into stories and fables for millennia, with the principle sources of the gemstone found far and wide, most commonly in Arizona, China and Pakistan.
Perhaps surprisingly, peridot is also found on the island of Hawaii, referred to locally as the 'tears of Pele,' after the goddess of volcanoes. The peridot is made from olivine, which is found in lava rocks. So along with the famous volcanoes of this land, the peridot has been found and glorified in equal measure.
In other parts of the world, the peridot was thought to have been a result of a sun's explosion. In fact, some might say they were almost right; this beautiful gemstone is, albeit rarely, found in meteorites as old as 4.5 million years.
Increasingly, historians believe that the famous green gems showcased around Cleopatra’s neck were not emerald, and were more likely peridot. Although some think we will never know for sure.
Picking a Peridot Gemstone
Picking a peridot gemstone can be a challenging task. The first choice you'll need to make is the colour you opt for. Peridot gemstones can range in shade from olive green to a green/yellow concoction.
If you are looking for a perfect peridot gemstone, the best come in apple green. These gems are the rarest and therefore the most expensive, but it’s important to choose a colour that is right for you.
Another consideration is the cut of the gem, a vitally important decision. Peridot allows for precise cuts, making it easier to to maximise its light and brilliance. Because of this, a round or oval shape might be the perfect choice.
However, peridots can also be cut into a princess or cushion shape, which allow for their colour to shine through in unusual ways. At Diamond Boutique, we offer gemstones in a range of sizes, cuts and colours. That way, you’ll never go without the jewellery of your dreams.
