Think about your partner's current taste in Jewellery

This may seem obvious, however, your partner's jewellery says a lot about who they are and what they like. To impress your partner, show them that you recognise the smaller, intricate details about them, such as their current jewellery interests. What colour ring/stone do they usually wear/purchase? Do they prefer simple rings (with one stone), or do they prefer large stones? They may prefer cluster rings which combine a larger quantity of stones in a cluster that vary in size, or they may prefer a band type ring which is similar to that of a wedding band. It can be difficult to be secretive when trying to find out these points, however by looking in their jewellery box, on their hands, in photographs or by picking up hints from them, you will get an idea.

Purchase the right ring size

It's always helpful to know or have an idea on ring size, especially if you are surprising them! Borrow one of your partner's rings without them knowing (if you can!) and take it to your nearest jeweller to be professionally sized. Make sure that this is a ring that you have seen them wear previously and that it is theirs. If you cannot locate any jewellery or it is too difficult for you to borrow any, it comes down to the guessing game - try and size up their ring finger using your own hands - it doesn't always work, but you can get a rough idea based on the thickness of your own fingers.

Set your budget

Don't worry about what others say about how much you should spend on an engagement ring. Most people say that you should spend multiple months worth of your salary on an engagement ring, however only you know what you are comfortable with in terms of finances. Your partner will appreciate the sentiment most of all and that's the most important thing.
